“Recently, while previewing my research on contemporary ASEAN photography, a French curator/photographer remarked that there are quite a number of photographers in the South East Asian region working on themes concerning the family. Apparently, this photographic “trend” is unseen elsewhere in the world today. As I ponder the reasons behind her observation, my mind drifted quickly to Vandy Rattana’s Looking In (2005-06) and Chan Moniroth Chiart’s Simple Fashion (2007). This short presentation provides a quick overview of contemporary ASEAN photographers working on issues related to the family. In closure, I will offer reasons as to why there is such a “trend” now amongst practitioners in this region.” - Zhuang Wubin |
