About the Artwork
The award winning By The Time It Gets Dark revolves around the student uprising and 1976 Thammasat University massacre in Bangkok through a shapeshifting plot that unfolds abstruse layers that mimic the nature of social memory and official history. Born in 1976, Anocha grew up with the event and its politics shrouded in mystery. With this film expressed as her “love letter to cinema”, she poses questions of representability – how film and filmmaker can address the subject of silenced histories, trauma and post-trauma. In her poetic and non-linear approach, uncertainty reigns, as it does in reality.
About the Artist
Anocha Mai Suwichakornpong (b. 1976, Thailand) is an independent film director, screenwriter and producer. She holds an MFA, Film Columbia University, New York, USA (2006). Her thesis film, Graceland (2006), was the first Thai short to be included in the Official Selection at Cannes Film Festival. Her first feature, Mundane History (2010), has screened at film festivals worldwide and won the Tiger Award in Rotterdam and Best Director in Mumbai. By The Time It Gets Dark (2016) has won many awards including Best Picture and Best Director, Thailand National Film Association Awards (2017).
