About the work:
Pao Houa Her’s series, My Mother’s Flowers, examines beauty and identity as it relates to her Hmong diaspora community by playing on the veracity of the image and its subjects. The black and white documentation of Pao’s mother’s fake flower collection formalizes their plasticity and how they signal, in the artist’s words, a “preservation of the domestic, with an everlasting bloom prioritized over reality.” The full-color portraits of Hmong women are either staged by the artist, or culled and manipulated from www.tojsiab.com, a dating site popular across generations in Laos and amongst Hmong diaspora. Colonially inherited studio portraiture – with its superimposed backgrounds, poses, and costumes – share the aspirational and artificial qualities of the flowers. The imperfect backdrops of Pao’s botany-like studies, and her manipulated portraits, serve to counter the pursuit of perfection.
About the artist:
Pao Houa Her (b. 1982, Laos) uses a variety of photographic vernaculars to address desire and belonging within the Hmong American community. Pao holds an MFA in Photography, Yale University School of Art, New Haven, CT (2012), and a BFA, Photography, Minneapolis College of Art and Design, MN (2009). She has been awarded the Jerome Fellowship for Emerging Artists (2013); Minnesota State Arts Board Initiative Grant (2009, 2012); and Alice Kimball Fellowship (2012). Her solo exhibitions include My Mother’s Flowers, Bockley Gallery, Minneapolis, MN (2016); Attention, Minneapolis Institute of Arts, MN (2015); and Focus: Pao Houa Her the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum, MI (2015). Recent group exhibitions include Migration Series, Telemark Art Center, Skein, Norway; and What Remains, Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago, IL (both 2015). Pao lives in Minneapolis, MN.
