About the artwork:
Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai’s series, Shadow, are digital snapshots printed in a size ideal for holding or archiving in a family photo album. Mai’s research involved weeks spent with residents of an ethnically Vietnamese fishing community in Siem Reap, Cambodia, who – as a result of layered legacies of conflict between Cambodia and Vietnam – remain excluded from the right to citizenship in either nation. Other than the bold black ink that carefully traces contours into silhouettes, the images document the very normalcy missing from the lives they depict. Mai defaces the subjects of these images by inking-in, adding rather than subtracting, layering as opposed to erasing. This obfuscation could be a somber meditation over the political histories we inherit but rarely ever control.
About the artist:
Nguyen Thi Thanh Mai (b. 1983, Hanoi, Vietnam) is interested in the construction and imagining of identity, especially in relationship to women and to the state. Recent solo exhibitions include Another World, Kunstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin, Germany (2016); Day by Day, SA SA BASSAC, Phnom Penh, Cambodia and Sao La Art Space, Ho Chi Minh Fine Arts Museum, Vietnam, (2015). Mai was artist-in-residence at Kunstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin (2015-2016) and Sa Sa Art Projects, Phnom Penh, Cambodia (2014). She received the Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant (2014-2015), and was a finalist (2014, 2017), Sovereign Asian Art Prize. She holds a BA, Fine Arts, Hue College of Arts, Hue University, Vietnam (2006) and MA, Visual Arts, Mahasarakham University, Thailand (2012). Mai lives in Hue, Vietnam.
