About the artwork
With Being 365, Emily Phyo plays on official systems of human surveillance so long associated with the authoritarian rule of the artist’s context. Being 365 was shot on the artist’s iPhone and originally created as a photographic series on Instagram and Facebook, posted each day throughout 2015. Emily’s cumulative and relational census both conceals and reveals, mediated by the tool of her livelihood running a tailor shop, with which she marks the sitter’s age between their covered eyes.
About the artist
Emily Phyo (b. 1982, Yangon, Myanmar) is a performance and installation artist living in Yangon. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, Dagon University, Yangon (2005). She studied art with Ko Jeu, Ko Z, (Ko) Kaung Su, and (Ko) Aye Ko at New Zero Art Space in 2008 and joined the V30 Contemporary Art Movement in 2009. Notable national and regional exhibitions and events include Body Report, 3rd Beyond Pressure performance festival, Yangon (2010), Being 365, Myanm/Art, Yangon (2016) and Net Present Value: Art, Capitol, Futures, Art Stage Singapore Southeast Asia Forum Exhibition, Singapore (2017).
