Sutthirat Supaparinya (Som)

About the work:

Sutthirat Supaparinya’s banned and restricted books project considers attempts across the Asia Pacific region to systematically eliminate singular voices. For this exhibition, she takes as her subject a book with current personal resonance, living as an artist under military rule: Angkor: An Essay on Art and Imperialism by Jan Myrdal and Gun Kessle. The end of the first section reads: “To write on Angkor is a necessary part of the struggle for liberation.” First published in Swedish in 1968, it was translated into Thai by Charnvit Kasetsiri and banned in Thailand from 1976 – 1998. Som both enables and renounces the legibility of the book, with the Thai translation physically bound in the exhibition and the English copy offered for reading in our library.

About the Artist:

Sutthirat Supaparinya (Som) (b. 1973, Chiang Mai, Thailand) is a visual artist who works in a wide variety of mediums, seeking to cultivate a freedom of expression through her art practice. She holds a BFA, Painting, Faculty of Fine Arts, Chiang Mai University (1997), and an MFA, Media Arts, Hochschule Fuer Grafik und Buchkunst, Leipzig, Germany (2001). Recent exhibitions and residencies include her solo 10 Places in Tokyo, Gallery VER, Bangkok (2017); the group exhibition Public Spirits, Centre for Contemporary Art Ujazdowski Castle, Warsaw, Poland (2016); and Wellington Asia Residency Exchange, New Zealand (2015). Som is a founder of Chiangmai Art Conversation, which promotes contemporary art of Chiang Mai, and is also the Director of Asian Culture Station, a gathering depot in Chiang Mai for citizens to build a sustainable relationship and to enrich mutual understanding between Thailand and other Asian nations including Japan.
