About the artwork:
Images of anonymous landscapes replace one another to the sound of each slide advancing. Each carries an anonymous figure pointing, somewhere, to something. Amassing hundreds of such images from online sources, Nguyen Trinh Thi pursues her interest in the practice of evidentiary documentation. The simplest human gestures used to clarify location or prove event turns into an image of a past presence or present absence. In its repetitious sameness, Landscape Series #1 is itself a pointing gesture to the unknown. To the artist, these anonymous witnesses, portrayed together in compelling uniformity by innumerable Vietnamese press photographers, show “a way forward out of the past, a fictional journey.”
About the artist:
Nguyen Trinh Thi (b. 1973, Hanoi, Vietnam) personally and poetically layers hidden histories and current events through experimentation with the moving image. Thi studied journalism, photography, international relations, and ethnographic film in the United States. Recent film festivals and art exhibitions include Los Angeles Asia Pacific Film Festival (2017); Rotterdam Film Festival (2016); Satellite 8 program, Jeu de Paume, Paris and CAPC musée d’art contemporain, Bordeaux (2016); Lyon Biennale (2016); and Asian Art Biennial, Taiwan (2015). She will exhibit in the upcoming 2018 Sydney Biennale. Thi is founder and director of Hanoi DOCLAB, an independent center for documentary film and moving image art since 2009.
