About the artwork:

Erika Tan’s, A Presentation by Proxy, reactivates and reinserts Halimah Binti Abdulla’s voice into a contemporary dialogue around nation, labour, and capital. Halimah lived and performed as a daily weaver and subject for colonial spectatorship inside the Malayan Pavilion for the 1924 British Empire Exhibition in London. Halimah’s her-story segues abruptly into Chris Marker and Alain Resnais 1953 essay film, Statues Also Die, connecting Halimah’s unique moment to an ongoing critique of the racist and limited (western) art canon and its gaze. A Presentation by Proxy was produced on the occasion of Erika’s publication launch, Come cannibalize us, why don’t you? / Sila Mengkanibalkan kami mahu tak?, in 2014 at the NUS Museum, Singapore, which is available for reading in the exhibition.

About the artist:

Erika Tan’s (b. 1967, Singapore) work has evolved from an interest in received narratives, contested heritage, subjugated voices, and the transnational movements of ideas, people, and things. Her work arises out of processes of research and responses to the unraveling of facts, fictions, and encounters related to events, locations, audiences, and specifics that may already exist. Select exhibitions include Diaspora Platform, Venice, Italy (2017); The Samsung Art Plus Prize, BFI, London (2011); Thermocline of Art, ZKM, Germany (2007); Around The World in Eighty Days, South London Gallery, ICA, London (2007); Singapore Biennale (2006); Cities on the Move, Hayward Gallery, London (1999). Erika studied Social Anthropology and Archaeology, Kings College, Cambridge and Film Directing, The Beijing Film Academy, and holds an MA, Fine Art, Central Saint Martins School of Art, London where she is a Lecturer on the B.A Fine Art course.
